While making the Game & Watch remix, I remembered how much I liked the line of Sony Sports products in the 80s.
It was a line of sporty water proof electronic products that were bright yellow and black, with a few contrasting colors. I wanted one badly, but was too young at the time.
It would be fun to see what the Game & Watch would have looked like, if it had been part of the Sony Sports line. So let’s make one!
This experiment was easier than the teenage engineering one for some reason. Maybe it’s because the Sony has so many iconic design details that make it super recognizable, or maybe it’s the standout colors.
I modeled the “Gameman Sports” in Fusion, incorporating many of the details from the Walkman, for instance colorful buttons on a rubber base, the volume wheel used in some later version of the Sports Walkman, the rubber head phone plug to keep water out and the mode switch on the back side.
I added the plastic belt clip that some Sony Sports products had and found fonts that were close to both the Walkman and the SPORTS logo fonts.
For printing the model was divided into parts by color (yellow main body and black details and belt clip were printed individually) and then assembled. I used water slide decals again and they were a real hassle to get to stick to the yellow PLA surface.
This is the finished result:
I’m very happy with this end result and I think it evokes the right 80s vibes. The Bambu Lab X1-Carbon 3d printer is a very impressive machine that produces prints with great detail and reliability.
