During the summer of 2025 I bought a 3d printer on kind of a whim. I wasn’t really sure how to use it, but I’ve always been interested in industrial design and electronic products.
The printer is a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon and it’s a pretty fast and accurate printer with an enclosed print volume. It comes with an optional Automated Material System (AMS), that makes it easy to print up to 4 different colors in the same print.
To learn how to use the printer and modeling software (Autodesk Fusion), I started with a simple project: Make some fridge magnets with movie quotes in multiple colors.
The purpose of these prints was to understand how precise the printer is in recreating small details in a design, and to learn what works well in terms of shapes and surfaces when printing with normal PLA filaments.
The prints came out nice. The X1 is very fast and still accurate, able to reproduce small details. The multi material support is great for objects like these magnets since it produces finished multi colored prints with no need for assembly or touch ups.
